‘Transformers’ Director Steven Caple Jr On Casting First Puerto Rican Lead in a $200 Million Dollar Film

Steven Caple Jr. is making history.

During an exclusive interview with Kulture With K, the “Transformers” Director discussed casting “In the Heights” star Anthony Ramos and why representation on the big screen matters.

“I try to do it on each of my projects but this one was something different,” he said. “We just haven’t seen a Puerto Rican lead at all ever. I’m kind of like breaking history right now with Anthony Ramos being the lead to a $200 million dollar movie,” he continued.

Caple, who is Puerto Rican and Black, says it’s important for his family to see diversity in his work. “For them to go to the movie theaters and see a lit bit of me in there you know a little bit of our cousins and my family it just means a lot.”

According to Deadline, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” brought in 60.5 million domestically and grossed $170 million in its debut weekend. The film which also stars Dominique Fishback is based on the Beast Wars storyline of the Hasbro franchise, and introduces the Maximals.

Caple also spoke with the outlet about the challenges he faced on set and described some of the best moments between Ramos and Fishback.
