Spyro Talks Afro Beats Getting Global Recognition: ‘It’s Not Enough’

Nigerian sensation Spyro attended the 16th annual Headies Awards in Atlanta over the weekend and shed some light on how he feels about Afro beats getting global recognition.

“It feels great to be here,” he said during an exclusive interview with the outlet. “I feel pretty elated, you know, it’s a great feeling — trust me.”

The singer and songwriter — who was up for several awards — shared how special it would be to win Best Collaboration for his viral hit “Who's Your Guy Remix,” featuring Tiwa Savage.

“I’m really anticipated that,” he said with a smile. “It would be great, it would make me really happy to win best collaboration and maybe the rest you know. We never can tell.”

Shortly after our interview, Spyro took home the award for Best Collaboration.

In addition, Spyro also opened up about Afro beats finally getting the recognition it deserves. Although he is pleased with the direction the genre is heading, he does believe it deserves a more prominent place on the international stage.

“There’s always room for improvement,” he said. “It’s getting the recognition, but it’s not enough. We’re going to get there, pretty much,” he added. “I believe that, I believe that we are getting there in the twinkle of an eye.”

Spyro's presence at the Headies Awards was not only a celebration of his own achievements but also an opportunity to shine a brighter spotlight on the vibrant Afrobeat genre.
