DJ Drama is opening up about a difficult time in his life in hopes of encouraging others to get help.

The Philly native sat down for an intimate conversation with Shanti Das, the owner of the Atlanta-based non-profit organization Silence the Shame, to discuss his personal struggles with addiction and how he was able to get his mental health in order.

DJ Drama revealed he started casually drinking lean, a concoction that contains a mix of codeine and the antihistamine promethazine combined with soda, a few years ago.

"I got in a position where you know where I was going through some relationship issues and some infidelity issues on my side and I went through a breakup and while I was drinking lean at that time I then started to have sleeping problems, he said.

As a result, DJ Drama eventually transitioned to Percocets where his addiction got worse. The Grammy Award-winning music executive revealed he started off taking a small dose to help him sleep, but within a short period of time, he upped his usage.

DJ Drama, whose real name is Tyree Simmons, described himself as a “functional junkee” who was able to keep his addiction under wraps from the public and those closest to him.

However, it wasn’t until DJ Drama ended up in the hospital back in 2020 that he realized he needed to go to rehab. He managed to stay clean once he got out, but towards the end of that year, DJ Drama found himself back outside enjoying the Atlanta nightlife.

It was during that time he ran into someone he knew who was able to provide him with Percocet and by December 2020 he had relapsed.

“Instead of going out, I would be by myself taking Percocets,” he opened up to Das. “On a personal level, it’s not something I’ve really told people about.”

Throughout all of 2021 DJ Drama was using again and at one point he hit rock bottom and almost suffered an overdose. Medical professionals went as far as administering Narcan and even after he was “still dozing off.”

DJ Drama revealed the hospital was going to keep him for a long period of time because of his condition. However, during his stay he overhead a nurse on the phone discussing intimate details about his stay which is a “Hippa violation.”

As a result, he was able to state his case and leave without being forced to stay. Two days later he was on set shooting his scene for the Netflix film “You People” where he found himself venting to actor Jonah Hill about his addiction.

That conversation changed his perspective and in that moment he knew he needed to change his life around.

“I continued to have the thought that I was going to die from overdosing and people are going to be posting about me saying RIP DJ Drama,” he said.

In July 2022, he checked himself into rehab for a second time and that was the last time DJ Drama had ever used Percocet again.

He also opened up about the importance of going to therapy and revealed he sees his therapist Amy every week via Zoom.

Tuesday night (May 16) was the first time DJ Drama shared his story and now he’s hoping to help others with their personal journeys to get sober and overcome their addictions.
